Is it worth it to rent a storage unit while we try and sell our condo?
March 17, 2010
We’re getting ready to put our condo up for sale and need to "de-clutter." Is it worth it to rent a storage unit for our extra belongings so that our place looks nicer?
The "stuff" definitely needs to be out. And you can make more money by having the condo "staged." So either a storage unit or a friend that has some extra space for awhile. But leaving stuff with friends can sometimes cause problems, so either parent’s garage or rent a storage unit is usually the best.

Definitely. Declutter, clean, paint, freshen everything up and you’ll end up getting more money for your place.
Make it look clean, spacious, airy, and bright.

Yes definitely. Your place needs to be staged. Watch HGTV Design to sell. Also go to HGTV website and type in staging and it will give you great ideas.

do you know any friends or family that have any extra garage space? the market for selling is really bad right now, not to discourage you but who knows how long your condo will be on the market, you might lose a lot of money on a storage unit

When we sold our first house, our realtor told us to take half of the everything in the house out. A storage unit is a good way to go. Another choice would potentially be a portable storage unit (PODS) type of thing. With those, they deliver a unit to your house, you fill it and lock it, then they remove and store it until you want it back. Cost wise, I’m not sure how effective it may be, but not having to haul load after load out to a storage unit is a definite plus.

As a former real estate agent… yes, definitely. The more "lived in" a house looks, the more uncomfortable potential buyers feel. They feel like they’re intruding and just want to leave. A home in show condition looks like something out of a magazine cover, MEANT to be looked at by outsiders.
Also, buyers will poke into everything, including your personal items. So lock up prescriptions and jewelry, or it may walk off.
